Written to I (Who Have Nothing) - Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway
A while ago, before the development of this project, in the early stages of the script that I had not yet read, and prior to my understanding or involvement in this narrative, Ivory had asked me how I felt about love (or something like that). I, apparently, replied quite pessimistically. ‘Delusion’. Love is - has the potential to be - consuming, and destructive. In this haze, or clarity, your core is so conveniently mirrored before you in this other person. In isolation, in a dance or, battle, of forces. I think things are ever rarely balanced - our wavering nature. We are left vulnerable, fragile, and reeking of fear. This is the human experience, who would be born must first destroy a world.
Giovanni’s Room comes to mind - being honest I scarcely remember the plot, I had read it over the course of a few shifts at an old job of mine last March. But I recall the the weight of that room; an ache, an imbalance, a grapple of forces, and despair. I recall the red walls and comforter I’d seen. Strangely, all of Baldwin’s bedrooms are red to me.
Muybridge’s ‘Wrestling’, simultaneously Bacon’s ‘Two Figures (1953)’.
Written to Sealed with a Kiss - Gábor Szabó
Working on this project has been so exciting. To be trusted by rentre, who over the years have become very close to me, beyond our work. To observe their persistence and strive to visualise their ambitions, and to be able to be a part of this process is so very much rewarding - to be working and collaborating with incredibly passionate and driven creatives, the man himself, Callum. Bouncing ideas off of each other and observing our differing approaches to the same matter has been very enjoyable, and enlightening - to be portraying my dear friends, Mimi, my eternal muse, and Alfie, renaissance man, has been so ideal. I am very grateful for my participation as an image maker on this project, I anticipate that my personal relationship to the subjects and to the team has allowed for a glimpse of reality in their characters, and of ourselves in our portrayal of them.
